A short tease of what we offer inside!
West Chester, PA — The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce (GWCC) has announced that the Side Bar & Restaurant at 10 East Gay Street in downtown West Chester is the 2013 Business of the Year. The award, presented annually to a Chamber member for outstanding achievement in the business community and the community-at-large, will be presented at a luncheon to be held October 16 at Penn Oaks Golf Club to Adam Wetzel and Justin Dougherty, the owners of Side Bar.
“The Chamber is proud to recognize Adam and Justin for their success and commitment to greater West Chester,” said Mark Yoder, GWCC president. “In just a short time they have done a great job of becoming an integral part of this town. The success of Side Bar shows you what hard work and determination can do and we’re thrilled to honor that.”
“To be a successful restaurateur you have to get a lot right. You have to be an expert in logistics, accounting, inventory, marketing, event management, human resources, security and even state and local laws,” said Tom Gavin, of the Chester County Hospital. “Side Bar and Restaurant did all of this right.”
Gavin said what makes Side Bar and any business outstanding is the knowledge that people are their greatest asset
“Justin and Adam treat people with respect and I think that’s why people go to Side Bar and Restaurant,” Gavin said.
Side Bar and Restaurant opened its doors in November of 2009 amid the recession. With hands-on experience at different positions in the restaurant business, owners Adam Wetzel and Justin Dougherty put a business plan together to fulfill their dream of opening a place of their own. As bartenders at the time with no ownership experience, their plan was denied a loan twice before being approved and acquiring the money to purchase the former Vincent’s Restaurant and liquor license.
“We talked about a place that we would love to work in, where we would like to hang out at night and be the bosses. We always wanted and create a positive work environment,” Dougherty said. “And also the best craft beer in town.”
Chamber President Mark Yoder recognized Wetzel and Dougherty for their success and commitment to the community in the short time they accomplished it by becoming an integral part of the borough.
Side Bar and Restaurant works with the community and supports Chester County Hospital through the hospital’s Shine Foundation and as sponsors of chamber events and fundraisers.
Matt Holliday, chief of staff for state Rep. Dan Truitt, said the Side Bar owners always provided when he asked them for help and are consistently willing to give back.
“Every single time they have stepped up the plate and always gave back and that’s the kind of men they are, they know what they receive from our community, they know they have been blessed in many ways and they turn around and they give it back to our community every day,” Holliday said.
County Commissioner Terence Farrell said the restaurant is a wonderful environment and the owners embrace the spirit of giving.
“These folks really have an aura that is very special,” he said.
